Paid Audio Recording Study (Dutch)

Job Description

About the Job
We're currently looking for native Dutch speakers from the Netherlands who are also proficient in English to join a paid audio/video recording study.

Who we're looking for

- Native Dutch speakers, proficient in English
- Genuinely bilingual - for example, you grew up speaking both languages, lived abroad, or regularly speak both at work or home
- Adults 18+ (diverse age range welcome)
- Outgoing and comfortable speaking conversationally for extended time (up to 30 minutes at a time)
- Have a stable internet connection and a dedicated external microphone (or headset with microphone)

What you'll do
You'll join an online call from your own device with 1 other participant. We'll record a natural conversation in your native language - but here's the twist: as you talk, you'll naturally mix in English words and phrases too, the way many bilingual speakers do in everyday life (for example, switching mid-sentence to an English word, or saying a full sentence in English before switching back). This is called "code switching."

Simple conversation parameters:

- Roughly 1 out of every several sentences should naturally include English. Just talk the way you would with bilingual friends or family - dropping in English phrases and sentences naturally, without translating or explaining them.
- Ensure you do not reveal any PII (Personally Identifying Information) about yourself or others
- Avoid toxic or sensitive topics
- Speak expressively! Sentence- and discourse-level prosodic variation consistent with naturalistic dialog, including pitch variation, rhythm, and intonation
- Pragmatic engagement: Speech reflects conversational intent and responsiveness (e.g. natural conversational pace of turn-taking)

Dutch Example: "Ik ben gisteren met mijn zus naar de bioscoop geweest, en anyway, the movie was so much better than I expected. Daarna zijn we nog snel iets gaan eten."

Translation Gloss for non-Dutch speakers:

  • "Ik ben gisteren met mijn zus naar de bioscoop geweest" = "I went to the cinema yesterday with my sister"

  • "Daarna zijn we nog snel iets gaan eten" = "Afterward we went to grab a quick bite"

We want natural code-switching where English mixes into the native-language conversation — mostly single words or short phrases, with full English sentences acceptable but appearing less often.

Conversation topics can include, among others

- Talking about a news event you've been following
- Riffing on a topic you love, as if recording a podcast
- Telling stories using fictitious names and places (no real personal/private info, please)
- Discussing finance, healthcare, customer service or restaurant experiences, and/or technology

Important

Session format

- Only native speakers are eligible to participate
- 2 participants per recording
- Minimum 7 recordings per session
- Location: Remote — recorded on your own device, from anywhere (as long as there is no background noise whatsoever)
- Compensation: Paid a total of $85.64 (USD) for a recording session which lasts 3.5 hours. If you need to leave earlier or your session is cut short, the amount will be pro-rated based on recorded time.

If you would like to recommend a friend or a family member to have the conversation with, this can be done during the Application process.
